Scarborough’s an Urban Success!

12th May 2009

Scarborough has joined 10 other towns in the UK in being shortlisted for the Great Town Award by the Academy of Urbanism.

The Urbanism Awards are publicly recognised as the best and most improved urban environments in the country.

The various categories include: The European City of the Year Award, The Great Town Award for which Scarborough is shortlisted, The Great Neighbourhood Award and The Great Place Award.

Scarborough has joined ten other towns in the country to be shortlisted for this prestigious award and others include Chester, Harrogate, Stroud, Tenby, Cambridge, Armagh in Northern Ireland, Dungarvan in the Republic of Ireland, and Perth and Lerwick in Scotland.

This list is cut down to the final three at a dinner to be held in Gateshead on 14 May, with the eventual winner announced at the final Awards Ceremony which takes place at Church House in London on 20 November.

The coastal resort of Scarborough has been nominated because ‘it is a most distinctive town’ and has benefited from ‘locally driven renaissance in recent years’.

Scarborough offers a wide range of culture and visitor attractions including, Scarborough Sealife Centre, Scarborough Art Gallery, the newly refurbished Rotunda and many local festivals such as Bike Week, the Continental Market and the Scarborough Cricket Festival, which is held on Scarborough’s North Bay and is just around the corner from our Clifton Hotel.

Pauline Elliott, who is Scarborough Borough Council’s Head of Regeneration and Planning Services, said:

“We are delighted that Scarborough Borough Council has been shortlisted for yet another prestigious accolade. We all know that Scarborough is a great place to live and work in but it would be a huge success if Scarborough was nationally recognised as a great town.”

Last year Scarborough won most Enterprising place in Britain and this year the coastal town is still in the running for the prestigious 2008/2009 European Enterprise Awards, the results of which will be announced later on this month.

The nominations and winning of these awards can only help the profile of Scarborough across the country and encourage more people to take a Summer break in the North Yorkshire seaside resort.
